South American Business Information, March, 2000

Last week Telefonica CTC Chile, that controls 83% of the Chilean local telephony market, presented to its competitors a proposal to share theuse of its infrastructure to render 7 different services. Following the proposal, other companies such as VTR, Telesat, Telsur, Justice, and IFX, may rent part of the assets from CTC and expand operations saving investments costs. Market observers comment that the implementing of the proposal will generate additional income of US$50mil to CTC, while its share in the local telephony market may drop to 70%. On the other hand the proposal does not extend to areas such as Valdivia, Osorno, Puerto Montt, and Coyhaique, where Telsur (Telefonica del Sur) has a dominant position.
