Brazil: Embratel to face hard competition.

The Brazilian fixed telephone service holdings are investing in data communications to compete with Embratel, that has 50% of this market amnd also 80% of the Internet traffic. The data communications marketincreased 40% in 1999, and this number may repeat in the next five years. The voice market may increase 15%. Telemar will invest US$200mil in a web-hosting project, what will reduce the interconnection price paid to Embratel. In 1999, the company paid R$600mil for interconnection services. Telemar has 22.9% of iG, Internet free of charge portal, and will invest to attract corporative users.
