Brazil: IPM and Splice will sell telephones for Telefonica.

IPM and Splice of Brazil are negotiating with Telefonica the sale of at least 50,000 public telephones to be set up in Sao Paulo. IPM and Splice plan to produce that equipment in Brazil. Brazilian telephone operators should increase the number of public telephones in the country from 913,000 units in 1999 to 1.6mil units in 2005. IPM also plans to introduce the Smilephone cellular phone model into the local market. It predicts to sell 100,000 units within a year. NTT DoCoMo is launching the i-mode cellular phones technology in Brazil during the Americas Telecom fair in Rio de Janeiro.
