Brazil: Embratel shows R$150mil Q1 profits.

Embratel long distance calls operator posted a profit of R$150mil in the first quarter (Jan-Mar) of 2000. In 1999, the company had a loss of R$69mil in the same period, mainly due to the monetary devaluation. The incomes with data communications increased 57.4%, to R$413mil, and with long distance calls, 31.4%, to R$1.3bil. The income with international calls increased 2.6%, to R$254mil. Embratel operates about 60% of thenational data transfer. This year (2000), the company will invest R$1.3bil in expansion and data communications.
