Brazil: Race to set up optical fiber networks.

Telecommunications companies such as Telefonica, Embratel, Lucent, and Netstream are installing optical fiber cables to increase their voiceand data transmission capacity. Brazil represents 52% of the Latin American e-commerce market, and need better facilities. And the telecommunications industry moves US$3bil in Brazil, and may increase 300%/year. Currently, Embratel, long distance calls operator controlled by MCI, has 760,000km of optical fiber cables. Telefonica installed 186, 000km of cables in the last 18 months, and has a net with 390,000km. Regarding the transmission capacity, 10% of the corporative market use 512Mbps to 1Mbps connections. But until 2002, 20.3% of the users intend to use 1Mbps connections, and 23.2% intend to user 2Mbps connections. Regarding...
