Brazil: Cellular companies expand to the countryside.

The cellular telephone companies from the Southeast of Brazil are investing to cover the rural areas. From the 7mil cellular telephones operating in the region, 40% are located in the inner cities. Telefonica Celular, for instance, will invest R$50mil in the State of Espirito Santo in 2000 to expand its net, from which R$25mil will be invested in radio base stations in the rural areas. In September, Telefonica will begin to serve all the 77 cities of the State. Currenlty, 65% of the company's clients are in Vitoria, capital of the State, but this number may increase to 50% until the end of 2001.
