Brazil: Multis increasing investments in alternative optical fibers.

The increasingly demand for data transmission services in Rio de Janeirostate is boosting expansion of alternative optical fiber networks not ownedby major telecoms carriers. AT&T Brasil, that took over Netstream in 1999,plans to double its network extension in Rio currently of 120km . TheAmerican Metrored and the Portuguese NQT (Nelson Quintas Telecomunicacoes)are investing R$14mil in their networks. Both companies were benefited froman existing infra-structure and in 1999 NQT installed its cables along Cerj"network (Companhia de Eletricidade do Rio de Janeiro) witn investments ofR$24mil .
