Brazil: Lucent sets up cable plant in Campinas.

The US Lucent Tecnologies innaugurated an optical fiber cable plant in Campinas (Sao Paulo state) to supply the company" orders all over South America. Since Telebras privatization in 1998 the production of optical fiber cables increased by 20% in Brazil and still is not enough tosupply the increasingly demand. According to Abinee (Associacao Brasileira da Industria Eletrica e Eletronica) the manufacturers are taking an average of 52 weeks to deliver their major size orders. Lucent starts with a production of 12.000 KM of cables per year expecting to export 25% of the total.
