Mexico: Tourists could be spared VAT charge in Mexico.

Mexico's chamber of deputies' tourism commission is studying them possibility of (partially) exempting tourists buying Mexican goods to take home with them to other countries from VAT charges so as to foment consumerism on visits to Mexico. VAT exemption would also be available to ex-pat Mexicans returning to Mexico to hold conferences and the like. VAT would be charged on 20 per cent of the product rather than 100 per cent as it is now. The commission also wants to amend regulations so that chambers of commerce for tourism spring up around Mexico, made up of those who offer tourism services such as car-hire and boat trip operators.Ricardo Ibarra, markets director for toy producing giant Mattel in Mexico, has stated that Mattel's sales are set to rise 40 per cent in...
