Chile: Telecom Italia to enter into the US through Entel.
South American Business Information, January, 2001
Telefonica Movil is worried about a possible partnership between Telecom Italia and Smartcom PCS, controlled by Endesa Espana. According to Telefonica Movil, that would negatively affect the government's intention of distributing licenses among telecoms operators equally. On the other hand, analysts said that Telecom Italia paid a high price for the Chilean telecoms operator Entel in order to enter into the US through Entel's subsidiary Americatel. Americatel holds a 10% market share in the US and forecasts profits of US$15mil for this year. Telecom Italia plans to invest US$300mil in Chile next year, mainly in Internet and mobile communications
