Uruguay, Jul 11, 2001
Uruguay has a high penetration of basic telephony but Internet penetration continues low, according to a report of the American consulting agency Yankee Group. At the end of 2000, there were 47,500 Internet connections bills paid, which represent a 1.42% penetration. Yankee Group also says that nearly 50% of the Uruguayan Internet market is in the hands of four ISPs: PSINet, Movinet, IFX and AntelData and connection tariffs are between US$16-20 monthly. In relation to other Latin American countries, Uruguay has registered one of the lowest growths in terms of Internet connection contracts paid.
