The electricity sector is almost in default.

The electricity sector is almost in default (meaning less service quality and more power cuts) according to Francisco Mezzadri, head of CAISE (Camara de Inversores en el Sector Electrico). The reason for this situation is the devaluation of the Peso and frozen tariffs. Some of the companies grouped in CAISE are Edenor, Endesa, Edesur, Transener, Electricite de France and CMS Energy. Figures are as follows: In 1993, the megawatt/hour was US$39 and US$21 by the end of 2001. At the moment this price is US$6. In 1993, the loss of energy in the distribution reached 22% and an average of 9.8% in the last 5 years. This year calculations are of a 12% loss.
