Embratel includes Manaus in optical fiber network.

The telecom company Embratel will include the city of Manaus (Amazonas state) in the Brazilian optical cables network up to the first half of the next year (Jan-Jun). The investments will reach R$15mil and the connection will be through Porto Velho (Roraima state), 900 km far from Manaus. The city has 1.5mil inhabitants and is only served by satellite and digital radio technologies. The Manaus-based industrial pole counts on more than 400 companies that turnover US$9bil in 2002. According to the company, the city will register expansion in Internet use. Embratel is negotiating with the governments of Brazil and of Amazonas state to make use of BR-139 and its infrastructure as light posts.
