Wal Mart may race for Bompreco, main supermarket chain based in the Brazilian Northeast region, to be sold off by the Dutch Royal Ahold. The US multinational and the local CDB (Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao), or Gupo Pao de Acucar, are the favorite bidders followed by Carrefour. Wal Mart has never acquired assets in Brazil. CDB registered R$11.7bil gross sales in 2002 - seven times higher than Wal Mart', which turned over R$1.7bil in the period.
