Over the 2000/2003 period, the Brazilian state owned oil and gas company Petrobras invested R$6.2bil in nearly 4,000 environmental and labor safety projects, spread over the whole country. From these projects, Petrobras highlights Pegaso (Programa de Excelencia em Gestao Ambiental e Seguranca Operacional) and the Programa de Integridade de Dutos. This last was created in 2001 to prevent leaks in Petrobras' 16,000 Km pipeline network, which transports petroleum, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and derivatives.
