NEC has a project to assemble a personal computer in Argentina using 52% of the parts and components manufactured locally, and should invest US$2.5mil - US$5mil in its plant at San Luis. Investments are tied to the planned production volume, while at San Luis the company manufacturers 1,500 PCs per month at costs of US$500 and using 30% of local parts & components. The goal is to reach a monthly production of 5,000 - 10,000 units with lower costs, and using local parts would give NEC an edge in the Argentinean government purchasing.
