Brazil: Thyssen joins Vale to erect US$1.5bil iron mill.

The investment that the German group ThyssenKrupp Steel is negotiating with the Brazilian CVRD (Companhia Vale do Rio Doce) to construct a big flat steel plant will be in Itaguai (Rio de Janeiro). Estimated at US$1.5bil the mill will be established through a j.v. The plant will have a capacity of 4.4mil m tons per year placing it as one of the largest of Brazil. The facility - 50/50 basis - starts up in 2007 or 2008 and production will be basically directed at exports to the Nafta (US, Canada and Mexico) and Europe.
