OTTAWA ROLE IN AIR LINE DEAL QUESTIONED

Suspending the competition rules earlier this month to find a solution for the airline malaise in Canada seemed like a good idea at the time. But the federal government may be creating more problems than it is solving, analysts said. Onex Corp's $5.7 bln deal to buy Canadian Airlines International and Air Canada and merge them is expected to open the door to other bids because the Onex deal is heavily backed by American Airlines. American's involvement means that for Onex's offer to go through, Ottawa would have to waive the restriction that no single shareholder can hold more than 10% of the stock of Air Canada. The...
