A NEW GARY FOR MANITOBA AS NDP DRIVES TORIES FROM OFFICE

The first day of autumn brought more than a change of seasons for Manitobans -- it also turned the province to NDP orange from Tory blue.

Gary Doer's New Democrats swept Gary Filmon's Tory government from power on Tuesday in a close-fought election.

Filmon, Canada's longest serving premier, also stunned teary-eyed supporters by resigning as Tory leader -- a position he has held since 1983. He was first elected as premier in 1988.

Doer exploited several issues to his advantage during the campaign, including a Tory vote-rigging scandal from the 1995 election and Filmon's cuts to health care, putting the Tories on the defensive....
