FEDS STICK WITH 50-50 SPENDING: CHRETIEN

The government will stick with the 50-50 spending formula it has followed since 1997, spending half on tax cuts and debt reduction and half on social programs, at least until the end of its current mandate, says the prime minister.

Addressing a projected C$95.5 billion in surpluses during the next five years, Jean Chretien said today his government will hold the line at least until 2001 and then consider options.

"That's the program of the Liberal party and it is the program of the government of Canada," he said going into the weekly caucus meeting. "Even all the premiers subscribed to that last August.
