Canada/US Reach Agreement On Potato Mop-top Virus.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reached a preliminary agreement with the USDA to work collaboratively on a common approach to handling potato mop-top virus (PMTV).

This follows a meeting last week between CFIA and USDA officials. The CFIA also announced it will be implementing additional controls on the importation of potatoes from the U.S. to reduce the risk of PMTV spreading into Canada.

PMTV is transmitted by a soil-borne fungus commonly called powdery scab (Spongospora subterranea), which is found in most potato-producing areas of the world. Symptoms may include discoloration and/or stunting of plant parts, and necrotic rings on infected tubers. PMTV is...
