Canada Press: Tug Strikes Threatens BC Pulp Mills.

The strike by 800 British Columbia tug and barge operators is starting to take its toll on coastal communities with predictions that layoffs in the forest industry could begin later this week, according to a report filed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Vancouver.

Dave Ingram of Doman Industries in the report said pulp mills can't operate without wood chips, which are barged in.

"The pulp industry's been depressed for quite a while, and we just started making money again and same with the whole operation. It couldn't be a worse time for us," he said.

Norske Canada which operates the pulp mill in Powell River is trying to make alternate arrangements...
