Direct push drilling for environmental investigation.(Cover Story)

For many years, geotechnical and environmental investigations have employed conventional drilling using a hollow stem auger to access a sampling point and a split spoon sampler, or similar equipment, to collect a sample. The technology has widespread acceptance, but has several shortcomings that may now be overcome using new technologies.

An alternative to drilling

Direct push drilling technology can be a cost-effective, time saving, technically accurate means of drilling and sample collecting. This drilling method has been used for over 10 years and, according to the EPA in 2003, is widely accepted in all 50 states for RCRA, CERCLA, UST and Brownfield site assessments and investigations.
