PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Chinese government has finally granted a Sino/German joint venture a license to proceed ahead with the development of their planned petrochemical manufacturing complex. The partners in the undertaking include Germany-based BASF AG and the local SINOPEC. Under the terms of the collaborative agreement, each company will hold a 50% interest in the venture.

Initial construction plans call for building an ethylene plant with an installed production capacity of 600,000 metric tons per year. In so doing STONE & WEBSTER (S&B), a newly acquired subsidiary of the SHAW GROUP, was awarded a letter of intend to build the complex at the end of August 2000.
