PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The local PETRON CORP. currently operates an 180,000-barrel per day (b/d) refinery in Bataan that has 3 crude distillation units. However, the government recently enacted new clean air standards that require that benzene and other aromatics in gasoline be reduced to 2% and 35%, respectively, by 2003, while the maximum sulfur in diesel is required to be at 0.05% by 2004.

As a result, PETRON is now gearing-up to install an additional refinery unit at its Bataan site. Construction plans under consideration would reportedly involve building a 22,000 b/d gasoil hydrotreater to enable the reduction of sulfur content. The cost to complete the upgrade project has been pegged at $100,000,000.
