PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The local FORMOSA CHEMICALS & FIBRE CORP. (FCFC) announced in August 2002 that it intended to build a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in China. The decision to proceed ahead with the project was prompted by the country's imports of 1.3 million metric tons of PTA in 2001.

As things currently stand, the Taiwanese government has approved the project. Construction plans under consideration call for building a complex with an installed production capacity of 600,000 metric tons per year. However, no implementation time frame has yet been announced.

In any case, the cost to complete the project has been pegged at $147,000,000.
