PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Japan-based NISSHIN STEEL CO. has been producing cold-rolled stainless sheet in China through a joint venture with local firms, including SHANGHAI BAOSTEEL GROUP CORP. since December 1998. The venture, known as NINGBO BAOXIN STAINLESS STEEL CO., has an installed production capacity of 160,000 tons per year (t/y) and is presently involved in an 80,000 t/y expansion project that is scheduled for completion in March 2004.

China presently relies on imports for 70% of its demand for stainless steel used in construction materials and tableware. In 2001, for that matter, demand totaled 1.6 million tons.
