PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The local SSANGYONG MOTOR CO. recently started-up construction work on a planned manufacturing capacity expansion project that is aimed at more than doubling its production output by 2007. The first phase of the company's expansion project for its plant in Pyeongtaek, about 70 kms south of Seoul, is eventually expected to cost about $1,900,000,000 to complete.

Once phase one is completed by April 2005, the plant will be able to turn out 300,000 vehicles per year as opposed to the present 180,000 units. The second-phase expansion is slated to begin late in the same year and be finished by 2007. As a result, capacity will be increased to 400,000 units per year.
