PROJECT OVERVIEW

An Indian joint venture recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the development of the 16 top seam of the Moonidih coalmine in Jharkhand, India. The partners in the planned undertaking include STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA LTD. (SAIL) and BHARAT COKING COAL LTD. (BCCL), the owner of the mine.

The project envisages procurement of long wall equipment in order to help provide additional supplies of around 500,000 tons per year (t/y) of prime washed coking coal to SAIL. Currently, SAIL sources around 4 million tons t/y of prime and medium coking coal from various subsidiaries of COAL INDIA LTD. (CIL), mainly BCCL.
