PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Brazil has provided about 90% of its electricity through hydroelectric power up until now. However, due to water shortages and the huge costs for dam construction the government is now promoting the use of gas to fire new power stations. As a result, the state-owned PETROLEO BRASILEIRO SA (PETROBRAS) recently awarded a couple of pipeline construction contracts to Japan-based TOYO ENGINEERING CORP. (TEC).

According to the terms of the award, TEC will be responsible for building a natural gas pipeline in northeastern Brazil. This new order follows up on another contract that was let for another pipeline in southeastern Brazil. The 2-900 km lines are both scheduled for completion by some time around the summer of the year 2004....
