Powerlight Corporation recently applied for a patent for an electric vehicle (EV) photovoltaic (PV) charging system. Powerlight is a manufacturer of complete kits of PV products and a turnkey contractor for systems installation. The company was founded in 1991 and is based in San Francisco, CA.

The PV charging system includes a "roof mountable to an electric car, and a PV assembly at the upper part of the roof." Powerlight said the PV assembly may be mounted to a separate roof surface or may itself constitute part of the roof.

The PV system may include a monolithic PV panel with a plurality of PV cells. In addition, the roof may include a storage region accessible through a closable access opening.
