Toyota to Test Fuel Cell Car By Summer.(Brief Article)

Toyota Motor Corporation recently announced it plans to test drive a prototype of a fuel cell-powered vehicle this summer. The public debut follows a joint road test in February by the Japanese unit of DaimlerChrysler and Mazda Motor Corporation.

The latest version of Toyota's fuel cell hybrid car will be based on a five-passenger Highlander sport-utility vehicle. The vehicle will primarily run on a fuel cell producing 90 kilowatts (kW) of power, compared to 25 kW in the previous version unveiled in 1997.

Toyota said there are "a slew" of unresolved technical problems, yet the automaker remains positive on the outlook for fuel cell cars. Toyota managing director Hioyuki Watanabe said that fuel cell cars may be available sooner than expected. He also...
