Nissan Begins Tests on Fuel Cell Vehicle.(Nissan Motor Co.)(Brief Article)

Nissan Motor Company recently announced it has begun test driving an experimental fuel cell vehicle (FCV) on public roads in Sacramento, CA. The vehicle is an Xterra sport-utility vehicle (SUV) fitted with a neodymium magnet synchronouse traction motor and compact, high-performance lithium-ion battery pack.
The car is Nissan's first direct-hydrogen-fueled FCV to reach the stage of test drives on public roads. Nissan has already conducted road tests of a methanol reformer FCV at its own testing facilities. The company said it hopes to put FCVs into practical use by 2005.
DaimlerChrysler said it has tested an FCV on public roads in Japan, and Toyota and Honda have done road tests for their FCVs in the U.S. The world's leading automakers are competing...
