Nissan Motor Company recently announced that it expects to have the capacity for fuel cell vehicle (FCV) production by 2005. The automaker said it will join with its partner Renault SA to invest $695 million over five years in FCV technology research and development.

"We are not in the race for size," said Nissan president Carlos Ghosn. "We are in the race for profitability."

Nissan said it would participate in the Japanese government's testing program for FCVs which is scheduled to begin in 2002. The automaker also said it would expand the use of ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) technology in up to 80 percent of its cars by the end of a three-year restructuring plan in 2003.
