NEC, FHI to Co-Develop Rechargeable Batteries.(NEC Corp., Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. form NEC Lamilion Energy Ltd. joint venture)(Brief Article)

NEC Corporation and Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. (FHI) recently signed an agreement to form a new joint venture company -- NEC Lamilion Energy, Ltd. -- that will advance the development of a manganese lithium-ion type rechargeable battery for automobiles.

According to NEC and FHI, hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles will require thinner, lighter, more compact, higher-performance and more competitively priced batteries. NEC said its laminate manganese lithium-ion cell, coupled with FHI's automotive battery pack, will "complete a battery pack that can be applied as the new power source" for next-generation automobiles.
