Canadian Companies to Experiment With EVs.(electric vehicles)(Brief Article)

Toronto, Ontario-based CAMI Automotive, Inc., a joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation, will work with Canadian battery manufacturer Electrovaya to assess the performance of lithium ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs).

The project will retrofit two Chevrolet Trackers with electric drive systems using Electrovaya's "SuperPolymer" lithium ion battery technology. Electrovaya vice president for finance Paul J. Van Damme says the batteries feature a storage capacity of 213 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), and have a lifespan of 300 cycles.

By comparison, conventional nickel metal hydride batteries have a capacity of about 100 Wh/kg, nickel cadmium batteries 80 Wh/kg, and lead acid batteries 50 Wh/kg. The...
