The city council in San Diego, CA recently announced that council land use and housing committee officials have voted in favor of a new pilot proposal to operate open-air electric vehicles (EVs) in the city's downtown area as "minicabs" during a one-year trial. Officials said the committee recommended testing no more than 35 of the EVs, with each taxicab company limited to 15 vehicles or less.
Despite the council's majority support for the EV initiative, dissenting councilman Charles Lewis argued that employing the new vehicles would prove unfair to companies currently awaiting approval to operate more city cabs, while taxicab representatives maintained that the market is already highly competitive.
