IBM Brings Mexico Notebook Orders On Line.

MEXICO CITY, May 24, 2001

The Mexican subsidiary of U.S.-based IBM this year will invest up to 70 million dollars at its Guadalajara notebook-computer plant, in the western state of Jalisco, IBM Mexico head of Manufacturing and Technology Alfonso Alva said. Alva said two major projects would see 500 new staff hired at the plant, Mexico City daily Reforma reported. One project will see the plant integrated with IBM.com - a marketing and supply system that allows customers to order notebook computers directly from the plant at which they are made. The system has already been implemented at IBM's plant in Charlotte, N.C., and the Jalisco plant will be next on board, beginning Aug. 13, Alva said.
