Internet Securities, October, 2001

MEXICO CITY, Oct 17, 2001

If reform of Mexico's electricity sector is achieved in 2002, it won't be until four or five years later that the industry sees results, said Rogelio Lopez-Velarde of consultancy Lopez Velarde Heftye. Several foreign companies, including Iberdrola, have taken part in bidding processes for projects, and have been patient in waiting for the sector to open up, he said. Energy ministry senior official Alejandro Cuevas said that the cogeneration of electricity is a sector ripe for private industry, pointing to a study by the National Commission for Energy Conservation (Conae) that said a potential for the cogeneration of between 5,200 and 9,700 megawatts exists in Mexico, reported Mexico City daily el Economista.
