Sulzer Hexis AG (Postfach 414, Zrcher Str. 12, 8400 Winterthur, Switzerland; Tel: 41/ 52 - 262 63 11; Email: emailhexis@sulzer.ch) has developed SOFC systems that will be available in the fall and marketed to city utilities. The systems supply both heat and electricity. The systems generate 1 kW of electricity and 3 kW of heat.

There are more than 50 pilot installations and these are showing good operating results. The Hexis fuel cell stack operates at around 900C. The heat-up phase during tests required several hours. How fast the cold start will be for a marketable system is not yet known. Hexis systems are heated up once and then remain at the higher temperature.
