VEHICLES: DOE Reveals Status of Costs, Durability.(Department of Energy, costs of fuel cell power generation, hydrogen production and dispensing)(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

Fuel Cell Technology News, June, 2002

According to estimates by the DOE (1000 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20585; Tel: 800-dial-DOE) Hydrogen Program, the Fuel Cells for Transportation Program, and the Fuels for Fuel Cells Program Annual R& D review, the current cost of off-board hydrogen production and dispensing is $19.20 per gigajoule of H2 ($/GJ H2) or $0.069/kW. The goal for 2005 is to reduce the cost to $17.20 $/GJ or $3.00/gal of gasoline equivalent by 2005 and further reduce the cost by 2010 to $16.20 $/GJ H2 or $0.058/kW or $2.10/gal of gasoline equivalent. A gigajoule is roughly 277.7 kW.

The cost of a 50-kWe (net) integrated fuel cell power system is $300/kW operating on Tier 2 gasoline containing 30 ppm of sulfur. The 2005 goal is $125/kW and the 2010 goal is $45/kW. The power...
