GE Global Research (One Research Circle, Niskayuna, NY 12309; Tel: 518/387-5000) has an advanced technology research program exploring some of the technical challenges in hydrogen energy. In particular, GE is exploring hydrogen production using fossil fuels (coal and natural gas) with sequestration of the carbon dioxide produced during the process It is also looking at renewable routes to hydrogen using solar and wind to power electrolysis or direct conversion to hydrogen using solar energy.

GE Global is developing the materials needed to solve the reliability issues associated with hydrogen pipelines. It is also researching on-board, solid-state storage via materials that would absorb hydrogen at low pressure and then supply it to a fuel cell. Leading GE's...
