EU Group Shrinks Budget Request.(European Union; hydrogen and fuel cell research funding)

According to the European Commission's (200 rue de la Loi, 1049 Brussels, Belgium; Telefax: 32-2/ 295-065) High Level Group on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, about $325 million will be spent during the 2002-2006 period by the European Union and Member States in research and development. The amount is far short of the $2.3 billion for the same period sought by European Commission President Romano Prodi to keep Europe competitive with the U.S. and Japan. However, individual country and company spending will raise the total amount spent in Europe to about $709.8 million.
