MHI Eyes 2006 for 1 kW Unit.(Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. )(Brief Article)

Fuel Cell Technology News, July, 2003

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI, 5-1, Marunouchi, 2-chome, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-8315, Japan; Tel: 81-3-3212-3111) reports its development of what it calls the world's smallest fuel cell. The cell is 100 by 60 by 30 centimeters, about half the size of conventional systems, and is capable of generating 1 kilowatt of electricity. MHI plans to promote the cell for home use, but will ship a number of units for corporate use on a trial basis at an undisclosed price by the end of this year. MHI's system extracts hydrogen from natural gas.

The company says the commercial production of the newly developed cell will not start immediately due to high manufacturing costs. MHI says it hopes to start selling home-use fuel cells through gas suppliers by spring 2006.
