There will always be the inclination to improvise or draw a curl pattern in the sand as other players huddle together, waiting word on where to line up.

But the days when NFL quarterbacks completely shoulder the play-calling responsibility and make decisions on some 75 offensive plays have been gone since the 1970s. There's too much at stake.

The game has evolved to become big business. Contracts for TV rights to broadcast the games are measured in the billions of dollars. Last year the average NFL team was worth $898 million.1 The cost of a 30-second Super Bowl spot this year ran close to $2.6 million.2
