LAST CEC QUARTERLY MTBE REPORT SHOWS USE REDUCED 74%

In the last quarterly report on California's usage of MTBE, refineries in the state reduced usage of the additive by 74% in the latter part of 2003, compared to the previous quarter, statistics from the California Energy Commission (CEC) reveal.

California refiners used over 1 million barrels of MTBE to make CaRFG during the fourth quarter of 2003, from Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the CEC said. That figure is down from the almost 4 million barrels of MTBE used to make CaRFG in the previous quarter. The CEC report noted the amount of MTBE reported is the quantity blended at each refinery location for use in the production of CaRFG and intended for sale in the state.
