Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) isn't ready to give up on passing an energy bill this year and is trying to broker a deal on one of the few obstacles to the bill's passage-MTBE.
The latest version of the energy bill, which includes a provision banning MTBE and removed an earlier provision that would have granted MTBE producers limited liability protection, has been languishing in the Senate. The MTBE liability provision is essential for its agreement by the House in conference, but the provision is not supported by a majority in the Senate.
