CONOCOPHILLIPS MUM ON U.S. MTBE PLANS

ConocoPhillips is mum on its plans for MTBE in the U.S. fuels market once the federal 2% oxygenate mandate expires next spring under federal energy legislation enacted last month.

Asked by RFN whether ConocoPhillips plans to stop using MTBE in New Jersey when the 2% federal oxygenate mandate is lifted, company spokeswoman Lara Campbell told RFN ConocoPhillips doesn't make MTBE at its refinery in Linden, New Jersey. New Jersey is banning MTBE in January 2009 under recently enacted legislation (see RFN 8/22/05, p6).

Two of the state's other three refiners, Valero Energy Corp. and Sunoco Inc., said they will stop using MTBE the day the oxygenate mandate is lifted, making New Jersey's MTBE irrelevant to them. Amerada Hess, another main fuel supplier to New Jersey, did not...
