Does ethanol carry an energy credit or debit? Does it require more energy than it provides? Those questions are the centerpiece of a long-running debate, which increased in rancor this summer as lawmakers in Congress debated national energy policy.

The net energy value (NEV) of ethanol is the difference between the energy content of ethanol and the energy used in producing and distributing it. Despite the advent of a national ethanol mandate, ethanol's "real" NEV remains a controversial and, from an analytical standpoint, unresolved issue, according to analysts at MathPro Inc., a consulting firm specializing in energy economics.
