New York awards cellulosic demo grant to Mascoma

A Cambridge, Mass. start-up has received a $14.8 million award from New York State to build and operate a 15,000 square foot cellulosic biomass-to-ethanol demonstration plant in Rochester.

The grant, funded by New York's Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, awards Mascoma Corp. capital to build a demonstration plant. The grant is contingent on the company's ability to obtain the necessary permits and definitive agreements with partners.

International Paper Co., Cornell University, Clarkson University and the Natural Resources Defense Council are part of the consortium supporting the project, along with biocatalyst developer Genencor, which has said it is adding capacity at its existing manufacturing...
